A Tribute to Ed Taylor.
If you grew up playing hockey in the 1960s and '70s in Scituate, you owe this man a debt of gratitude. Ed Taylor is personally responsible for teaching skating, hockey skills, and sportsmanship to hundreds of South Shore kids. Many of those kids went on to play youth hockey, high school hockey, prep school hockey, college hockey, Olympic hockey, and even professional hockey.
Here's how I remember him.
The Louvre has repeatedly asked Hoby Taylor if they could borrow this. He keeps turning them down.
The governor of Massachusetts sent this letter congratulating the Scituate Braves Pee-Wee team for winning the State Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament in 1973, a mere five years after the program started.
Scituate Braves Pee-Wee team photo after winning the State Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament in 1973.
Scituate Braves 1968 - 1973. The gold standard in youth hockey.
Ed Taylor started the Scituate Braves with one bantam team in 1968. These Scituate Braves Bantams played out of the Weymouth Rink on Middle Street, participating in the Greater Boston Hockey League. Ed Dalton, who owned the rink, told Ed that he should consider bringing a pee-wee team to the league the following year in addition to the bantams. Pee-wees were age 12 and under. Squirts and mites were established one year later. It's no coincidence that interest in youth hockey was significantly influenced by the success of Bobby Orr and the Big, Bad Bruins during this exact time. Every Level One athlete in Massachusetts was either playing or learning to play hockey. As youth hockey grew in popularity, specific individuals were given the authority to develop hockey programs and coordinate multiple age levels of the sport in their towns. Ed Taylor was responsible for Scituate, Cohasset, and Norwell. Ed Dalton had Weymouth. Harry Messina had Quincy. Red Hernberg had Hingham. Donald "Mocka" Mahoney had South Boston. Ed Johnson had Charlestown. Mike Addesa had Randolph. Ed Corrain had Brookline. Don Marshall had Hull. At this time there were no B or C teams, just an A team in the earliest years. As interest grew in youth hockey, all these towns had to create B and C teams to keep up with interest in the sport. Special thanks to Hoby Taylor.
Steve Gluck, SHS Class of 1973, donated the following items to this project.
