Scituate Braves Squirts Meet Scituate Selectmen. Joe Henderson (top photo) coached in the Scituate Braves program for years. I played with many of these kids all the way through the Braves program. Tommy O'Brien (top photo, just right of center), was our goaltender. His father was a Scituate selectman. Timmy and Brian Flaherty, along with brothers Michael, Shawn, and Mark played Braves hockey for many years. Their father, Arthur Flaherty, was a huge supporter of Scituate Braves hockey. Circa 1971.
Scituate's David Silk Won Olympic Gold in 1980 and the entire town came out to congratulate him. Nice touch that Ed Taylor was asked to be the master of ceremonies.
In January, 1975 a Patriot Ledger photographer took this photo of Scituate goaltender Brian Powell leaping for joy after Scituate beat Hingham in their first matchup of the season. It was the first time Scituate had beaten Hingham, a longtime rival, in over a decade.
Brian, a resident of Donnelly, Idaho, is a 1975 graduate of Scituate High School. He still plays goal twice a week in that standup old-hockey style. Brian has fond memories of growing up playing hockey in Scituate. He says he had much more confidence in net with Mike Breen, one of the best defensemen he's ever played with, in front of him.
Here's a great early Scituate Braves Squirts team photo from about 1971 or 1972. Front row from left: Danny Higgins, Danny Cox, Bobby Goodwin, Jack O'Donoghue, Andy Marhoffer, Stephen Breen, Gary Cooney, Matt Higgins, Peter Camerlengo, Wayne Cox Back row: Peter Ellis, Garry Hebert, Bobby Breen, Mark Richman, Joe Sullivan, Danny Orr, Alan Litchfield, Bobby Powell, and Corey Griffin. Many of these kids moved up to Peewees and were members of the 1973 Peewee State Championship team. Looks like the photo was taken at the Cohasset Winter Garden facing the Zambomi end of the building.
Here's a closer look at the Scituate Braves Peewees team photo from about 1971 or 1972. Front row from left: Josh Donahue, Bobby Powell, Peter Cooney, Gerry Kehoe, Brian Fay, Dicky Johndrow, Chris Griffin, and Mike Camerlengo. Back row: Gerry Duggan, Scott Stupinsky, Michael O'Brien, Kyle Vietz, Andrew Takki, David Silk, Bernie Durkin, Billy Higgins, Dennis Durkin, Pat O'Connell, and Bobby Dillon.
